Health Care for College Students

College may be the first time you’ve lived away from home and had to be completely responsible for your own health. It’s part of becoming an adult, and now’s a great time to start a healthy foundation on your own. There are lots of health care options that college students can take advantage of, and we’ll discuss a few of them here.

Most schools will have an on-campus clinic. These clinics function specifically for the university community, and often include general practice doctors as well as specialists. Campus clinics are incredibly convenient for students, especially those who rely on public transportation. These clinics will generally accept insurance, and some schools will even allow you to sign up for a student health plan that offers access to the clinic and other health resources.

Many college students choose to stay on their parents’ insurance plan while in school. Most insurance carriers will allow dependents to continue to be a part of the plan as long as you’re a full time student and under a specific age. This is a smart strategy, however, you should keep in mind that if you’re going to school away from home, you will need to be careful to make sure you choose doctors and services that are a part of your insurance plan, as they will change.

Discuss insurance options with your college. If you’re not able to stay on your parents’ insurance coverage, talk to your college about special agreements that may exist with certain carriers. Instead of having to get individual health insurance coverage, you may be able to sign on at a group rate through your school. Certain organizations will also allow you to get a group rate, which can represent an incredible savings on your premium and help you get better coverage.

Finally, many students choose to get individual health insurance. It can be expensive for lower quality coverage than you may be used to, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. If you want to save money and are in generally excellent health, you can choose to get catastrophic insurance, which will cover you in case of an emergency, but will require you to pay cash for all other medical issues.

College students have lots of options when it comes to health care. These are just a few of the ways you can deal with your health options in college. Take the time now to do your research and find out the best plan for you.
