1. Debbie Harry: Blondie front woman and 90s It girl Debbie Harry is also a successful actress. She was adopted in Miami at just three months old, but raised in Hawthorne, NJ, before graduating with an associate’s degree and taking food service and dancing jobs until performing with various bands in the 60s and 70s.
2. Faith Hill: Country music star Faith Hill is known for her powerful voice as much as she is for her dedication to keeping her family together. She often gives her parents credit for fostering her strong sense of family — but the man and woman who raised her aren’t her birth parents. Monroe, who was baptized Norma Jeane Baker, grew up in foster homes, claiming to never really know her real father. Her mother was mentally unstable and refused to let her be officially adopted, and Marilyn was even nearly sexually abused on several occasions while staying with her mother’s best friend’s family. Passed around among aunts and back to the best friend’s house, Marilyn was married off at 16 to avoid further foster homes.
4. Dan O’Brien: Decathlete Dan O’Brien won the 1996 Olympic Gold medal in Atlanta, and has won four other world championship gold medals for his sport. Of mixed race decent, O’Brien was adopted but white parents as a young child and raised in Oregon before moving to the University of Idaho, where joined track and field.
5. Senator Robert Byrd: Legendary U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd held the honor of being the longest serving senator in history — serving a total of 55 years. Born in 1917, Byrd was adopted by his aunt and uncle when he was just one year old, after his mother died of influenza. It was his mother’s wish for he and his siblings to be passed on to other family members instead of being raised by their father.
6. Steve Jobs: Apple executive and technology pioneer Steve Jobs discussed his adoption in his 2002 commencement address at Stanford University. His biological mother wished for him to be adopted by college graduates — he wasn’t, but his new parents did promise his mother that he would attend college. 10. George Washington Carver: Agriculture inventor and commandeer George Washington Carver was born into slavery in Missouri. After his mother was kidnapped and slavery was abolished, Carver was taken in by his former owners who taught him to read and write. Over the next few years, Carver moved around the country in pursuit of schools who would take him in, staying with foster families until he settled in Kansas to homestead some land, plowing farms to raise crops.
11. Edward Albee: Playwright Edward Albee was born Edward Harvey, but was adopted by the Albee family when he was just two weeks old. His new family were well-known in the theater world, although they wished Edward to have a more conventional career. Albee eventually ran away at 20 years old, moving to Greenwich Village and soaking in the art scene as he worked odd jobs.

Make each other a priority. It’s easy to let the quality time in your relationship slide when you have schoolwork and activities to tend to, but to keep the flame alive, you’ve got to put time in together. Don’t forget to make regular phone calls, video chats, and IMs. Even when you can’t be together, making plans for when you can see each other can make you feel like this distance isn’t so far.

Communicate effectively. Communication doesn’t just mean talking on the phone or sending emails. Communication is about setting expectations, explaining needs, and discussing issues that come up in your relationship. Carefully consider compromises, problems, and worries that you may have in the relationship. Answer hard questions, like whether you’ll date other people, and how often you will have a chance to visit each other. Setting up real expectations before you have distance between you will make your relationship stronger and can stop many conflicts down the road.

Be honest and trustful. One of the biggest downfalls of a long distance relationship, aside from not being able to see each other, is the challenge of trust. Going away to college apart can set each of you up for situations where the fidelity of your relationship can be put to the test. Have an honest discussion about expectations for each other, and stick to what you’ve promised, no matter what the agreement is. Trust your partner to not hurt you, and receive trust in return. Be a reliable partner, keeping phone dates and remembering to be thoughtful-these actions go a long way to reminding your sweetie that you only have eyes for each other.

A long distance relationship in college can be difficult, but it doesn’t have to be impossible. With the right communication, time commitment, and a good level of trust, you can enjoy your love, even from afar.

Attending nursing school online has opened up many doors for students who are burdened with full-time jobs and family life, allowing them to further their career goals without committing to a commuter school or a schedule that would wear them out.  With the new technologies on the market, online nursing school has become a viable option for many students who have found themselves in a similar situation.  Attending nursing school online is now no different than attending a traditional classroom program, although many students have found that the requirements of nursing school residency is reason enough to take the traditional route.

Kaplan University’s School of Nursing program is another popular online degree program, and includes an increased emphasis on preventive care and nursing care for the elderly.  This emphasis has resulted in higher career opportunities for students since projected employment growth in the coming years includes home health aides and nursing home aides. 

South University also has a nursing program that focuses on the future of its students.  However, this school focuses on a variety of nursing positions, ranging from nursing home care to home health and to school health clinics.  The school also focuses on management within the nursing community and teaches students how to better enhance their patient skills and motivate their nursing staff. 

Finally, Virginia College is another school that offers a top nursing program while focusing on the management aspect of the nursing industry at the same time.  Management in nursing is important because this is one way to work up through the ranks of the administration.  Rather than just stay in your same position for years, you can work your way up to the head nurse or at least manager of the clinic.  This school specializes in health management services and serves to attract students interested in similar endeavors.

Independence is a large part of the health care industry.  While students of online education are well aware of the way to work independently, many traditional classroom students are used to the crutch of professors or other students in their classes.  Without this crutch, online students experience a way to complete their own projects without outside help and to force themselves to create a disciplined schedule for schoolwork.  This is one of the best aspects of online nursing schools since students will have to learn independence at some point in their nursing training.  The health care industry encourages working together, but you must know how to work independently and make decisions on your own: decisions that could be life-threatening or life-saving.

The difference between MDs and RNs is well established in any health care unit, as nurses work independently and have their own system of authority ranging from the head nurse to the newly entered nursing assistants.  Doctors have a completely different type of authoritative structure and therefore the two circles rarely meet.  Consulting with a doctor only rarely happens and typically revolves around the initial moment of patient instruction.  After this point, most nurses are on their own to decide their own course of action with the patient and inform the doctor when need be.  This independence is well established in the nursing community and the sooner you can learn to work independently, the better.

The benefit of online nursing school is therefore that it teaches students a wider realm of independence and allows them to think on their own before entering residency.  By the time they reach their residency requirements, they will be well suited to be on their own in the clinic or hospital, without the need of contacting the head nurse or another RN for questions.  This early separation not only from MDs, but also from other potential RNs is a valuable tool for early nurses and helps teach them the structure of a health care setting, early on.  Keeping MDs and RNs separate is a way of life in the health care industry and not only teaches both sections to work independently, but also reminds them that they can rely on each other when they need to, without intruding on their “territory”.
