Accredited Nursing Schools in California

RNs: All registered nurses in California must first earn a nursing education, either through a nursing diploma from a nursing school, an associate degree in nursing, or a bachelor’s of science degree in nursing. However, it should be taken into consideration that most major health care facilities now prefer nurses with at least a bachelor’s degree-level education in the nursing field. After completing an approved program, prospective nurses must successfully pass the NCLEX-RN examination. Before taking this examination prospective nurses must be fingerprinted for official records. There are approximately 23,3030 RNs working in the state. Every two years, all RNs must apply for a nursing license renewal in order to ensure continued competency. To qualify for a renewal, RNs must have completed 30 hours of Board approved continuing education within the past two years.

LPNs: There are approximately 62,300 LPNs (referred to as LVNs by the state’s Board of Nursing) in California. All LPNs must successfully complete a state-approved vocational nursing education program. These are typically only a year long and are available at technical schools and community colleges. Some high schools and hospitals may also offer LPN nursing courses. In addition to finishing a nursing program, all prospective LPNs must also pass the NCLEX-PN or NLN examination. Similar to RNs, all LPNs must satisfy continuing education requirements before they may renew their license. To qualify for a renewal, RNs must have completed 30 hours of Board approved continuing education within the past two years.
