RNs: If you have an interest in practicing nursing in the state of Massachusetts, you are required to hold as well as maintain a valid, current license issued by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing. Those who have graduated from an RN programs are unable to accept employment in nursing positions until after the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing has issued them a valid current license. Since this license is required to always be current, all RNís are automatically sent renewal forms six to eight weeks prior to each nurseís birthday to whichever address they have listed in the Boardís records.

LPNs:The requirement of having a valid, current license issued by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing does not change for a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or any other paid or voluntary position looking to practice nursing in Massachusetts. Once they have been issued a license, they are free to continue within their profession. However, as a way of demonstrating continued competence to practice nursing, fifteen contact hours of nursing continuing education are required every two years in order for renewal of a license. If you decide not to renew your license by the date you are given, then not only will you license expire, but you will also be required to pay a late fee.
